Rodolfo “Paco” Bodden, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on August 29, 2019. He was the patriarch of the first family baptized in the Dominican Republic. Thanks to the dedicated efforts by John & Nancy Rappleye and Eddie & Mercedes Amparo, they were baptized in a swimming pool owned by a family friend in August 1978.
I first met brother Bodden and his wonderful family, later that same year in November 1978 late at night arriving at the Santo Domingo Airport the Bodden family was there to meet us. I will never forget that remarkable, fortuitous, wonderful, and happy night when we first arrived.
1978 was an historic year for the church in the Dominican Republic when we saw the hand of the Lord bringing the gospel to the faithful people there in a well-executed plan. A plan that the missionaries, leaders, and members witnessed unfold, and seeing the hand of the Lord in bringing the blessings of the restored gospel to this beautiful Caribbean country. Brother Bodden and his family were a crucial part of this.
Brother Bodden was humble, dedicated and very interested in doing the right things. Not enough good can be said of this giant of a man. He was a true gospel pioneer, we will all miss him. I have really enjoyed remembering and reminiscing about so many good memories of him. What I remember most is his willing service. Shortly after his baptism he served as Sunday School President of the Piantini Branch, and then a year later as President of the Piantini Branch, and then later he served in the District Presidency driving all over the country, with his family, supporting the new branches of the church. His service brought eternal, life changing moments to the lives of many people.
This is a testimony given by Brother Bodden many years after his conversion:
"I know that this church is true; I know that Joseph Smith was a prophet of God, that he was an instrument of the Lord to restore the Church in this day. I know that the Book of Mormon is true… The Church helped my family and me a lot, and helped [me] grow spiritually, because even though I already believed in Christ, we learned a lot of things about the Gospel that completed the knowledge we lacked. This turned out to benefit my family and me, because it was in a time that my children were growing, a time that they needed to continue on a correct path, as they have all done." (Bodden Oral History, p. 17)
It is a blessing to hear and feel his testimony. As he helped spread the gospel throughout the Dominican Republic, many lives were forever changed. The light of truth of the restored Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints radiated from Rodolfo “Paco” Bodden. I will dearly miss him.

Rodolfo “Paco” Bodden, falleció en paz rodeado de su familia el 29 de agosto de 2019. Fue el patriarca de la primera familia bautizada en República Dominicana. Gracias a los dedicados esfuerzos de John y Nancy Rappleye y Eddie y Mercedes Amparo, fueron bautizados en una piscina de un amigo de la familia en agosto de 1978. Primero conocí al hermano Bodden y su maravillosa familia, más tarde ese mismo año en Noviembre de 1978 tarde en la noche llegando al aeropuerto de Santo Domingo. La familia Bodden estaba allí para recibirnos. Nunca olvidaré esa noche notable, fortuita, maravillosa y feliz cuando llegamos por primera vez. 1978 fue un año histórico para la iglesia en la República Dominicana cuando vimos la mano del Señor llevando el evangelio al pueblo fiel allí en un plan bien ejecutado. Un plan que los misioneros, los líderes y los miembros presenciaron y vieron la mano del Señor al traer las bendiciones del evangelio restaurado a este hermoso país caribeño. El hermano Bodden y su familia fueron una parte crucial de esto.
El hermano Bodden era humilde, dedicado y muy interesado en hacer lo correcto. No se puede decir lo suficiente de este gigante de hombre. Fue un verdadero pionero del evangelio, todos lo extrañaremos. He disfrutado mucho recordando tantos buenos recuerdos de él. Lo que más recuerdo es su servicio voluntario. Poco después de su bautismo sirvió como Presidente de la Escuela Dominical de la Rama Piantini, y luego un año más tarde como Presidente de la Rama Piantini, y luego sirvió en la Presidencia del Distrito conduciendo por todo el país, con su familia, apoyando las nuevas ramas de la Iglesia. Su servicio trajo momentos eternos que cambiaron la vida de muchas personas.
Este es un testimonio dado por el hermano Bodden muchos años después de su conversión:
"Sé que esta iglesia es verdadera, sé que José Smith fue un profeta de Dios, que fue un instrumento del Señor para restaurar la Iglesia en este día. Sé que el Libro de Mormón es verdadero... La Iglesia ayudó a mi mucho a mi familia y a mí, y me ayudó a crecer espiritualmente, porque aunque yo ya creía en Cristo, aprendimos muchas cosas del Evangelio que completaron el conocimiento que nos faltaba, y esto resultó en beneficio de mi familia y de mí, porque fue en un tiempo que mis hijos estaban creciendo, un tiempo que necesitaban seguir por el camino correcto, como lo han hecho todos”. Es una bendición escuchar y sentir su testimonio. Mientras ayudaba a difundir el evangelio por toda la República Dominicana, muchas vidas cambiaron para siempre. La luz de la verdad de la Iglesia restaurada de Jesucristo de los Santos de los Últimos Días irradiaba de Rodolfo “Paco” Bodden. Lo extrañaré mucho.
